Intelligence and legal support

Intelligence gathering: Funding is also needed for intelligence networks that provide information about poaching groups and their activities.

Legal costs: Patrols often work with lawyers and courts to make sure poachers are brought to justice. This includes court proceedings and other legal processes that require financial support.

Education and awareness

Educating local communities: Funding is needed for education programmes that raise awareness of the importance of protecting wildlife and discourage local people from cooperating with poachers.

Anti-poaching campaigns: Funds help finance public campaigns against the illegal trade in products from endangered animals (such as rhino horn or ivory).

Operating costs

Fuel and supplies: Besides vehicles, fuel, food, water and medicine must be provided for rangers, who often spend weeks on patrol in remote areas.

Bases and logistics: Maintaining bases and equipment stores and organising patrol logistics also requires funding.

Transport

Vehicles: Off-road vehicles and motorbikes are essential for moving quickly across large areas. Patrols also need money for vehicle maintenance and fuel.

Helicopters and aircraft: In some cases, air support is needed to track poachers effectively. However, it is very expensive.

Technology and surveillance equipment

Drones and cameras: Modern technology such as drones, infrared cameras and surveillance systems is key to monitoring large areas, often at night or in hard-to-reach places.

GPS and animal tracking: Patrols need technology to track the movements of endangered animals — for example GPS collars, which let them respond to threats before poachers strike.

Gear and equipment

Protective gear: Equipment such as bulletproof vests, uniforms, boots and other protective gear is essential for rangers' safety.

Weapons and ammunition: Patrols have to defend themselves against poachers, who are often well armed. Money is needed for weapons, ammunition and other means of defence.

Ranger training and pay

Training: Anti-poaching patrols rely on experienced rangers who need regular, high-quality training to track poachers effectively, protect animals and survive in harsh conditions.

Salaries: Rangers' pay is key to their motivation and ability to do their job. They often work long hours in remote and dangerous areas, exposed not only to poachers but also to wild animals.
